Monika
Oechsler: The Chase
London-based German artist
Monika Oechsler’s video installations and photographic works
have been widely internationally exhibited and she was commissioned
alongsode Sarah Miles and George Barber to respond to the theme
of Remote Sensing: outlook and observation. The project
was devised by South West Media Development Agency, Picture This,
Spacex Gallery and Prema and it was funded by the Arts Council of
England’s National Touring programme with additional financial
support from South West Arts.
In The Chase a male and a female performer encircle each
other in a never-ending race, with speed and motion employed to
create alternating rhythms of remoteness and fleeting encounters.
The work asks the performers to go to their maximum level of physical
strength and beyond and the work’s cyclical nature is echoed
by the location, an athletics race track, and as the performers
sense each other across varying distances the gaze of the camera
and the viewer become explicit in the construction of difference
and desire.
Remote Sensing: outlook and observation was published in
collaboration with SWMDA.
