Without
Boundaries 2001
Following the success of the Without
Boundaries at Brief Encounters in 2000 Picture This was invited
to programme an artist’s film strand again. The programmes
celebrate significant British artists and introduce audiences to
alternative ways of making short films.
Cordelia Swann Retrospective
Swann’s films are investigations of authentic memories, real
places and events constructed from either beautifully composed images
or clips from Hollywood movies. In many works the emotionally diverse
landscapes of London, the American West, Manhattan and Las Vegas
are combined with starkly contrasting poignant narration. The screening
comprised The Citadel, Out West, Desert Rose
and Back East. Followed by Cordelia Swann in conversation
with Gary Thomas, Visual Arts Officer (Artist’s Film and Video),
Arts Council of England.
Jayne Parker Retrospective
There are two major strands in Parker’s work: the expressive
and sensual quality of musical composition/performance and the representation
of the body. AL Rees described Parker’s film as ‘pure,
lucid and direct’ in a publication on the artist as filmmaker.
The screening comprised RX Recipe, The Pool, Cold
Jazz, Whirlpool, Foxfire Eins and
Reprise. Followed by Jayne Parker in conversation with
AL Rees, Senior Research Fellow at the Royal College of Art, London.
One + One = Gilbert & George, Wood & Harrison, Lansley
& Bendon
One + One explores the nature of collaborative practice
through the screening of three bodies of work by artistic duos.
Each of the partnerships collaborates to both perform and direct
cleverly constructed and sometimes humorous temporal worlds. Followed
by Wood & Harrison and Lansley & Bendon in a discussion
chaired by Heidi Reitmaier, Eyestorm.
