Mary
Longford: Fold/Unfold
Somerset-based Mary Longford
began her artistic career as a performance artist before working
with video in recent years. She studied Fine Art in Context at the
University of the West of England and her work has been exhibited
in East International, Norwich Gallery; at Chapter, Cardiff and
at the Threshold Gallery, Bath. The exhibition Fold/Unfold
was realised through a collaboration between Picture This and Newlyn
Art Gallery.
Fold/Unfold continues Mary Longford’s ongoing interest
in cloth and clothing. It features the humdrum action of handling
bed-linen on a washing line whilst a soft and at times disturbing
narrative makes audible the woman’s inner rehearsal of what
is on her mind. The work’s powerful emotional charge lies
in the resonance of the physical activity and the sheets themselves,
set against the quiet voice and its painful but familiar story.
Exhibition:
3 May - 7 June 2003, Newlyn Art Gallery, Cornwall
