Lucy
Gunning: Quarry
Lucy Gunning lives and
works in London and is an artist that works with video, installation
and performance. Gunning has had solo exhibitions at Westfalischer
Kunstverein, Munster, GreenNaftali, New York and Tate Gallery, London.
The artist moved to Bristol for three months to take up a residency
organised by Picture This and Spike Island. During this time she
researched mineral and geological collections and sites through
a contact at the University of Bristol Earth Sciences department.
The project was funded by the Regional Arts Lottery Fund.
Quarry presents us with two spectacles, one of the great
outdoors legitimised by industry, the other, an intensely private
interior world, animated by an extraordinary depth of knowledge.
The exhibition comprises contrasting high quality large-scale projections
of on the one side - rock blasting - and on the other - a geologist’s
collection housed in his bed-sit.
Exhibition:
20 September to 26 October 2003
Spike Island, Bristol
24 June to 30 August 2004
Greene Naftali Gallery,
New York
