Commotion
An exciting new touring series of
programmes put together by curators from the UK , Finland, Ireland
and the Netherlands. The programmes are themed and explore different
issues or creative genres.
You Made Me Love
You
Phil Collins' the louder you scream, the faster we
go was the impetus for this selection of intimate and moving
portraits. The three music videos display Collins' capacity to place
us between empathy and voyeurism with his customary humour. The
programme explores the vulnerability of a subject in front of a
camera, the potential for exploitation and duplicity. Who is looking
at who? Artists include Phil Collins, Michael Curran, Frances Hegarty,
Matthias Müller and Christophe Giradet and Grace Ndiritu. Curated
by Claire Doherty, Director of Situations and Senior Research Fellow
in Fine Art, Bristol School of Art, Media and Design.
"You Made
Me Love You explores not only the pleasure of looking, but the
endurance and fraglity of th objects of our gaze; the older woman
as 'faded'
or humorous; the younger
woman or boy as flawless, silent, desired object; the desirability
of tears and the ease by which a pose, a costume or a gesture creates
a victim or a perpatrator. Watching these short films, we become
aware of the cinematic and photographic apparatus of betrayal."
Claire Doherty,
programme curator, You Made Me Love You
