Gander
As it presents itself
- Somewhere vague was produced by Ryan Gander and Picture This,
a joint commission between Whitstable Biennale, Picture This and
South West Screen as part of Recorded Live, a programme
of new performance to camera moving image works.
As it presents
itself - Somewhere vague is a new video installation that exploits
the medium of plasticine animation. It is produced by Wonky Animations
of Bristol.
The
work brings together characters based in the comedian Spike Milligan,
curator Matthew Higgs, Mrs Frances Gander - the mother of the artist,
the Lumiere Brothers and a generic animators armature that being
the skeleton of the other characters.
The
characters seem to be auditioning for a piano piece, but they appear
to be nervous and unsure of themselves and their reason for being
on stage. As viewers, we are put into the position of a spectator
within a gallery, within a film and in turn with the auditorium
of a theatre. Richard Briers provides the voiceover which acts as
the work's narration from the perspective of the characters involved,
but in hindsight - questioning the intention of the work.
As
it presents itself - Somewhere vague was exhibited at Whitstable
Biennale, please go to www.whitstablebiennale.com

Recorded
Live is supported by Arts Council England Lottery Funding. Ryan
Gander is represented by STORE, London, Annet Gelink, Amsterdam
